Tears of the Ascendant

Mission One: Part 4
Promises Kept, Secrets Not

Wet and wounded the party regroups. The cleric heals the rest of the party and they trudge on. After a short time another noise alerts them. A humanoid noise of clanking armor. It is a paladin fleeing a group of sewer crocodiles. The heroes help the paladin put down the troublesome sewer vermin and introduces herself. During the meet and greet a startling transformation takes place and the paladin and the cleric undergo a metamorphosis into beautiful celestial beings (very very aasimar). Some discussion with each other revealed they had similar tales of parental abandonment with the temple of Saerenre at the same time. The striking resemblance made it the obvious conclusion that they were siblings separated at birth. The reunion they decided should wait until their task was done. The paladin having been after the thugs the party dispatched earlier stayed with the group.
Only a short distance from where they met the paladin, the druid gingerly scared off a dire rat, and the part proceeded to disable the traps and climb the ladder into the lower level of the enemy base. Once there Netea spotted a trap they were not tipped off about and avoided raising an alarm. Dispatching two sleeping agents of Norgorber they party made their way upstairs, this time without surprise. As Netea rounded the corner a crossbow caught her with an incredibly solid hit (dropping her immediately to 2 hp). Russel retaliated blowing off the head of the young woman with the crossbow but suffering a drain that nearly debilitated her. Netea charged the enemy dark priest who channeled energy but perhaps because of the distraction caused by his girlfriend collapsing in a heap he was not on his game as his channel only did 3 points hitting most of the party (everyone but the gnome and paladin saved for 1 point). He survived a nasty series of attacks to channel again, this time getting 9 damage, enough to down everyone but Netea who had been healed and Russel who was out of range but of little combat use still. With a final desperate swing before he channeled a killing blow she dropped the dark priest. The cleric was revived and the party received what healing was left. Looting the place they found a good sized cache of gold and the stone head.
Returning the stone head to Levera the Red they are rewarded greatly with gold and a masterwork item (weapon, light armor or two tools). They return to House Avenstar victorious, and bloodied.

Mission One: Part 3
Getting Down and Dirty

So beaten and bruised the party returns home. The next day determination to set out and find what happened to the stone head the were commissioned to find sets in. These are the things they quickly find:

  • The head was taken at night while guards were “delayed”
  • A guard was fired in connection with the delay under suspicion of connection with the crime
  • The head was cut off with a thin bladed adamantium hand saw
  • There is a woman that would come veiled to visit the statue every month.
  • The statue seemed out of place and unnaturally positioned as though it was moved there from another location.

After discovering these things it was determined that they should make a quick stop at the temple of Shelyn and demand more information about the person who wants the head. The priestess of Shelyn gave in to their request and told them it was a Medusa called the sculptress who was being blackmailed into what amounted to slavery. She had finally saved enough money to buy a stone salve to remove the petrification and someone stole the head to stop her. As she venerated Shelyn and had purchased the salve from their temple they felt it a calling to aid her (not to mentioned it was prophecy).

With all this great information the group sought out the lead they had…a fired guard. There was good fortune with them as they found his hangout on their second try, but they were about 5 hours early, which was great for Netea who had plenty of time to drink then. When the ex guard arrived he was obviously put on edge when the conversation turned towards his incident with the statue. A short pursuit and a brief scuffle in the street and he was subdued and allowed to leave after giving up the information they wanted. He told the party he worked through an intermediary for the people that took it. A half-orc prostitute had handled the middle man work. The half-orc had no problem talking to the party and for some coin revealed what he knew. He asked the party to dispense with the man who ratted him out (something they never did). Shortly after their talk with the half-orc a couple of rouges of Norgorber walked into the establishment and approached Netea. After a brief exchange she stood and was stabbed by the pair. Their initial assault was about all they achieved as she retaliated in kind with a critical that downed one of them as the plant and the druid rushed to her aid. After a rest and some healing the party sought the entrance to the thieves layer. A trap and a lock later they were walking through the fume filled city sewers. As they worked their way through the sewers they encountered a group of cutthroats that they defeated and took one prisoner. That did not last however for as they interrogated the prisoner (unsuccessfully) they heard a small rumble, then a loud one, then they noticed thy high water, then waist deep (in deep waste), and then Netea and Russel were swept away by the current, Netea, severely injured from battle receives a substantial blow to the head and is rendered unconscious and begins to drowned. The water slowly disperses but it is up to Russel to save the unconscious half drowned elf. Unskilled in healing the plant tries to revive Netea and intuits CPR (Natural 20).

Mission One: Part 2
The Cathedral

In an effort to determine why the party was attacked the day before, our party strikes out to seek the sage advice of Arsimovs superior, The Horned Man. The ancient druid admitted that the cypher of the book they recovered off the orc was beyond his cryptography skills of which he had none. In his vast wisdom and knowledge of the city though he directed his apprentice to the Clockwork Cathedral where scientist and engineers in the city go to train. On arriving at the Cathedral they found it a stark and boring place. An acolyte was nice enough to instruct them on how to navigate their way to the classes dealing with cryptography. They did not properly prepare for a drawn out wait and as a result provisions (alcohol) ran in short supply, Netea decided to accelerate the automated door system to advance their progress. Unfortunately one of her attempts resulted in an improperly secured door which then crushed her to near unconsciousness. Fortunately that was the last door to the class where they met a friendly halfling who translated the book for them. The book they discovered was a bounty book for the bloody barbers. They found that there was a hit put out on the paintings that they had been transporting as they were seen as a status symbol, something someone did not want house Avenstar having any more of.
The halfling then informed them that security would be looking for them for vandalizing the doors and so shortly there after a daring rooftop escape involving clockwork solders and small mechanical angels, and a lot of rope ensued. Ultimately they fled back into the city with a crowd of people who where leaving the cathedral for the day.

Information Garnered:
1. Someone else was after the head they were after.
2. The Clockwork Cathedral has some nasty clockwork guardians that won’t follow into the city unless ordered to.
3. There were several people that had hits out on them in the Puddles district, a couple in the Coin, and one in the foreign quarter for mid range amounts (100-500 gp).
4. Someone actually wanted a clockwork angel from the cathedral (whopping 10,000 gp)
5. There was a bounty for the Primarch Grix of Gyr for 20,000.

Mission One : A Not so Chance Encounter
Lady in Red

The story begins as the last of the members of the party is plucked from her happy place sunning in the fields outside of Absalom. Taken to the green houses for examination she was discovered to be a leshey. The Leshey Russle was scared and attacked the gardener Scott. The rest of the staff retreated the the in house druid Arsimov was summoned to try to identify the plant and its dangers. Once a report opened up the value of a plant speaking creature was realized and the House added her to the roster as well. For the next two weeks the members of House Avenstar get to know each-other. They are…
Rustle – the Leshey Wilder with mind powers.
Arsemov – the Deep Gnome Wolf Druid.
Edveen – the Half-Elven Wizard Arsonist .
Netea – The pure-blooded elf who’s loves trouble.

The group of House Avenstar miss-fits is asked to travel to the Temple of Shelyn to acquire some commissioned paintings of important house members. The party was asked to undertake a task for the temple while they were there by a master artist named Levera the Red. A painting of the party full-filling a prophecy was in storage in there vaults, and as fate had decided…the opportunity for them to fulfill this prophecy was at hand. With a mission to recover a stone head and the basics of where to start they set off for House Avenstars holdings in the Petal District. While traveling the edge of the Foreign District the party was assaulted by a group of orcs. Fortunately the party was on guard for such shenanigans and were able to end the threat in less than a minute. The four orcs lay bloodied and broken. Now they just need to clean up after themselves…
